Job title: Skills Lab Technician

Main Purpose of the Job (Job Summary)

The job holder is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the skills lab, partnering with medical faculty to coordinate realistic training environments. He/she is responsible for setting up training environments and guiding hands-on clinical skill development.

Main Responsibilities.

1. Clinical Simulation Operations & Lab Setup.

  • Arrange anatomical models, task trainers, medical devices, and consumables required for instructional demonstrations, student practice sessions, and practical exams.
  • Configure and program simulators to deliver accurate, scenario-specific physiological responses.
  • Design and apply realistic medical moulage to enhance the authenticity of clinical scenarios.

2. Technical Mentorship & Assessment Support.

  • Assist in the oversight of independent student practice hours, providing guidance and reinforcing proper clinical techniques as taught by academic staff.
  • Train students on the correct and safe operation of advanced medical technologies and equipment.
  • Support faculty in administering high-stakes practical evaluations, such as objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

3. Inventory Management.

  • Maintain an accurate ledger tracking all laboratory equipment, surgical apparatus, and medical consumables.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, routine safety testing, and basic troubleshooting on simulators and equipment/systems to maximize operational uptime.
  • Monitor resource depletion rates to forecast and draft procurement requisitions for upcoming academic terms.

4. Laboratory Health and Safety.

  • Enforce strict laboratory adherence to Occupational Health and Safety standards and chemical hazard guidelines.
  • Coordinate the institution’s master schedule to optimize room allocation and resource sharing across various student cohorts.
  • Track and document student attendance, laboratory utilization analytics, and equipment defect logs.

Work Experience, Academic & Professional Qualifications.

  1. Diploma/Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  2. At least 2 years of experience in the management of an academic skills lab.
  3. Valid professional registration/license from the respective regulatory body.
